Disney On Ice celebrates 100 years of Magic | SSE Arena, London

Feld Entertainment’s new arena spectacular does everything it can to give audiences exactly what they want, and the reaction from the fans is palpable. Disney on Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic ambitiously sets out to tell multiple stories with a dizzying number of characters, and virtuosic ice dancing. The show centres around Mickey Mouse and friends trying to make a new film with Goofy’s video camera, and looking through all of Disney’s classics for inspiration.

The main attraction is an abridged Frozen, staged very similarly to the full-length Disney on Ice show, which closes the first half and features ‘Let It Go’ as well as all the other hits. The stories of Finding Nemo, Beauty and the Beast and Mulan are also told from beginning to end, although in extremely abridged form. If that wasn’t enough, there are also standalone production numbers from Pinocchio, Aladdin, Toy Story, The Lion King, plus a medley featuring all the Disney princesses and princes, as well as the running framing device of Mickey Mouse and his Clubhouse pals discovering all these new stories.

Young fans will delight in singing along and seeing so many of their favourite characters come to life (the reaction to Rafiki’s entrance in The Lion King was huge). And the whole audience will marvel at the dancers’ extraordinary spins, jumps and lifts. Showstopping highlights include the macho, death-defying ensemble dance with sticks for “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You” from Mulan, and the lighter-than-air elegance of the Blue Fairy’s dance as Jiminy Cricket sings “When You Wish Upon A Star” from Pinocchio.

The set is somewhat minimal but it leaves space for choreography, lights and costume to tell the story. There is no live music and the whole show is mimed, but the dancing, design and special effects lifts this show to a level beyond Disneyland-style parades and theatre shows. There’s something for everyone in this jam-packed celebration of Disney classics.
