NICK CODY | Edinburgh, Assembly Two

‘…like throwing Nutella through a hedge…’

If you are not even slightly curious to discover how this imagery joins up with Nick Cody’s coprophilous humour, his show is almost certainly not for you.

If you are, then you’ve hit the bloody jackpot. Beard Game Strong is an hour of gut-hurtingly funny stories from the mouth of a naturally likeable, unnaturally hairy man. Making his debut in Edinburgh, Cody and his beard command the stage with warmth and ease. His straight-talking Australian style cuts to the chase without wasting any time. Soon the show is dripping in tales of loose-unit parenting, visits to Afghanistan with Victoria Cross winners and run-ins with bears in the American wilderness. It’s quite a ride, and one that will suit those with a happy-go-lucky disposition who appreciate the beauty of brash hipster-baiting, wheat-tolerant, milkshake-guzzling laughs. And gangster rap — it would help if you liked gangster rap.

On the basis of this performance, Nick Cody’s maiden appearance is long overdue — at 28 he’s got plenty of time to build himself into a Fringe legacy. Let’s hope he doesn’t mace himself in front of any bears over the next 12 months so he can pick up where he left in 2016.
